Picking and Order Preparation Outsourcing: Precision and Speed at the Service of Your Warehouse

A wrong order costs twice: it costs to ship it and it costs to pick it up again. Order preparation is one of the activities where errors have immediate consequences on customer experience and operating costs. For this reason, picking is not an activity to delegate to anyone with warehouse space, but a process that requires method, technology, and trained personnel.

At LDE, we manage picking outsourcing as a central part of our integrated Logistics. In this article, we explain how our process works.

What is picking outsourcing

Picking is the operation of retrieving products from their location in the warehouse to compose an order. In the context of order preparation outsourcing, the entire process, from product location to packing and shipping, is managed by an external Logistics operator on behalf of the customer.

It is a service that is part of integrated Logistics: it is not just "taking a package from the shelf", but managing in a precise and traced way the entire sequence that transforms a digital order into a package ready for the courier.

B2B picking and e-commerce picking:
two different processes

The operational logic of picking changes radically depending on the sales channel.

In B2B picking, orders are typically scheduled, in larger quantities and with wider delivery windows. The priority is precision in documentation and compliance with agreed packing lists. An error on a B2B order can block a production line or generate a commercial dispute.

In e-commerce picking, the critical variable is time. Orders arrive continuously throughout the day, often transmitted by the customer's system every two hours, and must be fulfilled by the daily cut-off to guarantee next-day delivery. Volumes are high, units are single, and picking speed is decisive. Discover how we manage e-commerce Logistics.

At LDE, we manage both flows, with separate processes and personnel dedicated to each channel.

How our order picking process works

The operational flow is divided into precise phases, without redundant steps.

Orders are received in the system and assigned to warehouse positions. Each product has its own coded location, which the WMS system manages to optimize picking routes and reduce wasted time between picks.

Picking happens in waves: orders are grouped into work batches and processed in sequence, to maximize efficiency and respect shipping priorities. Each operator receives picking instructions directly on the device, with the exact position, quantity, and SKU code.

After picking, products are moved to the preparation line. They are verified, packed according to the customer's specifications, and labeled for shipment. Each processed order is confirmed in the system, updating warehouse availability in real time.

Picking traceability is complete: every movement is recorded and reconcilable with the original order.

Why outsourced picking makes sense compared to in-house management

Building an efficient warehouse order management process internally requires significant investments: space, shelving, WMS systems, trained personnel, handling equipment. These costs are fixed, regardless of actual volumes.

Relying on an already-structured operator transforms fixed costs into variable costs. You pay for orders processed, not for the structure that manages them. And you get access to an already-proven process, with quality control procedures already tested and personnel with operational experience.

For growing companies, this flexibility is decisive: the warehouse picking service scales with volumes, without requiring upfront infrastructure investments.

Picking integrated with warehouse
and transport

The value of our picking outsourcing service lies not only in order preparation, but in integration with everything else. Goods are stored, picked, packed, and handed to the courier by the same operator, with a single tracking system and a single point of contact.

This eliminates handoff points between different operators, reduces error risk, and ensures that warehouse availability is always up-to-date in real time, both for forward flow and for returns. Learn more about our integrated Logistics services.
