Groupage Transport: How It Works and When It Is the Right Choice for Your Business

Not every shipment fills a full truck. For companies that move small-to-medium volumes on a regular basis, groupage transport is often the most efficient solution, both in terms of cost and logistics organisation.

Here at LDE we manage it as part of our shipping and transport service, and in this article we explain when it genuinely makes sense and how the operational process works.

What is groupage transport

Groupage transport, also known as LTL transport ("less than truckload"), is a shipping method in which goods from multiple different clients are consolidated onto the same vehicle. Each company pays only for the space actually occupied by its load, sharing the transport costs with other shippers heading to compatible destinations.

It is a solution designed for companies that do not have sufficient volumes to justify a full truckload (FTL), but still need to ship regularly and in an organised way. In partial load B2B transport, groupage is often the optimal balance between cost and service.

Groupage vs. full truckload: when to choose which

The choice between groupage shipping and a full truckload (FTL) depends on three main variables: load volume, delivery urgency, and type of goods. Groupage makes sense when the load does not fill a full vehicle: paying for an entire truck to move a few pallets has little economic logic.

Conversely, when volumes grow, the shipment becomes urgent, or the goods require specific transport conditions that cannot tolerate intermediate stops, dedicated freight transport becomes the more appropriate choice.

For many companies, the answer is not "always groupage" or "always FTL": it is using groupage for regular flows and dedicated transport for exceptions — urgent shipments, high-value goods, deliveries with binding time slots.

How we manage groupage transport at LDE

Our third-party groupage service operates on regular departures along national routes, with capillary coverage across Northern Italy and connections towards Central and Southern Italy. The location of our three warehouses along the A4 motorway — in Brembate (Bergamo), Trezzo sull'Adda (Milan) and Telgate (Bergamo) — allows us to collect loads efficiently and consolidate them quickly, reducing transit times compared to operators with less concentrated infrastructure.

Every LTL shipment is tracked from collection to delivery: our satellite monitoring systems allow us to provide real-time updates on the status of the load. The client does not need to contact the warehouse manually or wait for an end-of-day update — visibility is continuous.

Which sectors and volumes it suits

Groupage transport suits a very wide range of goods and sectors. Among the clients who choose it most frequently, we work with companies in the consumer goods sector with periodic replenishment flows to distribution, fashion producers shipping sample collections or partial season orders, and hi-tech companies moving components or finished goods in batches too small for a full truckload.

The basic criterion is simple: if you ship regularly (weekly or fortnightly) volumes of a few pallets (up to around 20) to fixed or semi-fixed destinations, partial load freight is almost certainly the most efficient solution available to you. Below a single pallet, an express courier is often more cost-effective; above 20 pallets with urgency, a full truckload becomes competitive again.

Groupage in Northern Italy and international shipments

Our groupage operations in Northern Italy focus on the provinces of Bergamo, Milan, Brescia and Monza-Brianza, with regular departures and capillary coverage across the territory. For routes towards Central and Southern Italy and abroad, we operate through partnerships with selected national and international carriers, guaranteeing continuity of service and full traceability across all routes.

International groupage is a natural extension of the service for companies that regularly move partial loads to European destinations. As with domestic routes, the client pays only for the space used, with the same real-time visibility on the load.
